Questions about the pump houses on the Stickmarsh

Hey Jim:

I wrote some time ago with a few questions so keeping with that form, when you speak of the pump houses moving water what is the general direction. I know of the pump house in the se corner of 13. I know of the pump house on the east wall of 13 about midway and I know the big gate near the ramp. How does it all work? Anything will do!

Doug

Doug:

Only the gate on the east side of farm 13 is really a 'pump'. The rest, as you described them are all gravity-operated intake gates. The gate next to the parking lot (on the south side) is also used as an intake gate, whereby the local farms pull water from the Stickmarsh for irrigation. They do that by pumping water into the farm canal from the lower level canal behind that gate. That pulls water from the Marsh to re-fill the lower canal. The flow of the SE gate (coordinates -1 on the stickmarsh interactive map on my web site) is south to north. The east side farm gate (coord. G-4) is east to west. The gate at the ramp area (coord. G-14) is east to west when entering the Marsh. There is one other gate at coord A-15 and it is a gravity gate that drains the Marsh into the St Johns River basin when the Marsh gets high. There is a small gate at F-15 that can allow water out of the Godwin Duck marsh, on the north side of the Marsh, when necessary. I have never seen it running.

As part of the agreement for the Government to purchase the land for the impoundment, the farms were guaranteed to right to back-haul the water for irrigation, when needed. That only happens at that gate by the parking area

Jim

A common question that we get: "Is there somewhere close to get bait and tackle?" This is where we get our bait.
