Is there a formula or chart that will help to determine the tolling depths of lures and trolling rigs factoring speed, line length and weight?
Dear Jim,
I do a lot of trolling for Rainbow and Lake Trout in Vermont. I am still kind of new at it. I usually run a Multi-blade trolling rig (i.e., Luhr Jenson trolls or Dave Davis) with either a lure, crawler or minnow. I will also use some weight to get down deeper. My problem is that I never really know how deep I am running. Is there a formula or chart that will help to determine the tolling depths of lures and trolling rigs factoring speed, line length and weight? I hope you can help me. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Dan Emmons
Dan:
The only way I know is to troll across a bar or reef or point that has a known depth and let out line until you finally start to bump it. Then, make your line with an indelible magic marker. There are too many variables to have a formula. Line size, diameter, and friction of the type line you use, weights, lure sizes and weights, etc, etc, etc.

A common question that we get: "Is there somewhere close to get bait and tackle?" This is where we get our bait.
