Noisy Baitcaster Reel

Dear Jim,

I just bought a Abu Garcia Eon Low Profile baitcaster. It makes a little bit of noise and I am not sure it is supposed to make it when just reeling it in. I would compare this sound to bill dances fishing reels when he sets the hook and starts reeling extremely fast. The problem is that mine makes this sound all the time. Is this a problem or not? This reel also does not continue spinning after I reel in and let go. All of my spinning reels continue spinning if I let go during the middle of my retrieve. Is this a problem? PLEASE WRITE BACK! I am very worried about my reel and am wondering if I should return it. It would be cool if you could test this reel out and tell me about it also. Do a lot of reels make this noise?

p.s. I bought off the Internet at basspro.com

That reel should make no noise. So, I would say something is wrong. There might be an easy 'fix' for it. Take the right side plate off (the side with the handle) and check for grit or anything loose. Pull out the spool and check the gears you see for broken places or any grit. Oil the left bearing that the spool rides in. Replace the spool and oil the right shaft of the spool. Carefully, place the right side plate back on. Be sure it is fitting properly before you tighten the screws. That should fix it. If not, let me know and I can probably get it fixed for you.

As to the reel continuing to spin, I am not sure what you mean. When you let go of the handle, the automatic anti-reverse takes over and stops any reverse movement of the spool. That means you must use the drag with a baitcaster. They are not like spinning reels, where you can go with the anti-reverse or turn it off.

Let me know if the above fixes your problem.

A common question that we get: "Is there somewhere close to get bait and tackle?" This is where we get our bait.
