Spawning Gar?
Dear Jim,
I meant to ask you yesterday but forgot. When we first went into the "back water" where we saw you fishing, we saw all kinds of splashing in some shallow water. I decided it must have been spawning gar rather than feeding bass. Do you think I was right?
Bob
Bob:
You are correct - spawning gar. April is usually their month. You may see two gar swimming together; one just under the belly of the other. You will see them jump out of the water and do a belly flopper at times. That is intended to break the egg sacs loose from the internal membranes. In some areas where the wind was moving water well, I also saw some needlefish flipping on top. Be careful not to think they are bass, just because they break the surface a little. Bass never break the surface EXCEPT to chase prey. That will sound like a .22 long rifle going off as they snap on the prey.

A common question that we get: "Is there somewhere close to get bait and tackle?" This is where we get our bait.
