Where to buy a good catfish bait?
Dear Jim,
You have a real good site. I live on Lake Eufala in Ala. I want to try some catfish traps, but I can not find anywhere that sells soy bean cake around my area. Do you have any information?

Joe, I have an acquaintance named Shelby Dixson (sdixon@gt.rr.com) who manufactures what may be the best catfish bait there is. He also makes a cotton seed cake to use as a chum to bait the holes. But, the cake is heavy and can only be sold directly in large quantities, so as to offset the shipping charges. I am forwarding this to him in case he can help you further.
You can usually use either the cotton seed cake or the soybean cake. Both will work. I usually get it at a feed store, where you can get farm animal feed, salt blocks, tack, etc.
Shelby makes a prepared catfish bait called 'Catfish Candy'. It comes in a chunk form in a plastic bag and looks for all the World like a regular sink bait. BUT, it actually smells GOOD!! I was very surprised. AND, it also catches catfish exceptionally well. I have 3 people who I am supplying the Catfish Candy to for testing. They are avid catfishers here near my summer residence in NC. So far, they have caught cats really well. All the waters are now muddy and high from the recent rains, so they are going to test it in that water next. I tried it below a couple of dams and the fish ate it well. I even used the bait chunks for chum by tying them in some pieces of old panty hose material with a rock for weight. using long cord, I dropped three bags to the bottom and tied them off to a limb. Two days later, I fished this deep hole along the river edge and there were cats there.
It's good stuff, but I don't know if it is in stores at present. Shelby will have to address that.
