Backlashing ABU 5500C3
Dear Jim,
My father-in-law passed away and left my son with this reel (ABU 5500C3). We both have tried to cast it and only get it backlashing on us. Can you tell me the trick to casting this type of reel without getting the backlash. I've done allot of fishing with close face reels.
Russ
Dear Russ
The C3 series is great. I have been using the 4600C3 for many years. The 5500C3 is just a wider spool version of it.
First, remove the right side plate (3 captive screws) and look to se that the reel is clean and free of rust/corrosion. Then, apply a little oil to each side bearing and the spool shaft.
After reassembly, check the setting of the star drag be sure the drag provides just enough friction that you can just move the spool forward with thumb pressure. Then, adjust the tension adjustment on the left side plate until you can feel it restrict rotating the spool and handle. The tension adjustment will keep you from casting very far, but it will keep the reel from backlashing. Gradually loosen the tension adjustment until you get to a point where you can cast and still not backlash. One other thing, be sure you are using 14-20 lb. mono on this reel (or 20 lb. Fireline).
A free-spool reel like this one takes practice to learn to use. You have to educate your thumb to feather the spool.
