Taper and Action of Fishing Rods

Dear Jim,

As a fishing beginner, I have sought many ways to improve my chances of catching fish. One of the most effective methods is to read articles on all types of fishing methods in the hope that some of the experience will rub off on me!

I have found your website a fantastic resource in helping to understand the basics behind catching fish - which has made my fishing experiences much more enjoyable.

I have decided to buy a new rod, and have been researching the different types available.

My question refers to taper and action, which I have found a little confusing! Your article "choosing a new rod" has been a great help - although I have found the action/taper section conflicts with other articles and information I have read regarding the taper and action of a rod. i.e. the article is under 'tips and tricks' - about half way down (under For schooling Bass, try this sure fire rig".

Your article mentions:
Fast or short taper = slow action
Slow or long taper = fast action
Other articles (on 'bigskyfishing.com/gear-technique) have stated that:
Fast taper = fast action
Slow taper = slow action

Can you please help me a little?

Thank you for your help - and keep up the good work, your website is fantastic! Best regards,

Dear Joel:

By golly, you are right, you sharp-eyed eagle, you. I suppose my tongue got over my eyeteeth and I couldn't see what I was saying!! But, somehow, I did write that one backwards. I will fix it when my webmaster gets back on line. I am glad you saw that. Don't want any bad info on the site.

The good thing it shows someone is really reading what we have on the site!

One other thing is that a fast action rod tip casts a lure best.
