Rough Water on Lake George
Dear Jim,
I was reading all the information on your web page and I noticed that it (note: our article entitled 'Along Florida's St. Johns River - Lake George') told the depth of the lake. But, you didn't give fair warning to the younger generation of fishers that don't know the facts about how "storms" come up very quickly there and, because of the shallow waters, the waves can get 4 to 6 ft. high.
I should know; I lost my little brother there last July 4th. He drowned out there close by the pilings you mentioned in your info and was found by piling #7, in the bombing range.
Can't something be done about informing all these young men with boats on how rough that water gets? He was only 25, and left behind a baby girl. If everyone can give out advice on what "lure" to use, then this shouldn't be that hard to help out with. If you are able to have one person take caution when a storm is coming in, then it was worth it. If it'll help one person pay attention to the weather, and be careful, then we did our part.

Dear Rhonda:
I am sorry for your loss.
As I recall, the younger we are, the more invincible we think we are; the less we think about safety; the more prone to take chances we are. I clearly remember that I always had to be reminded, by my Mother, to wear that life jacket. I got away with not wearing that safety device for a long time and, luckily, never had that accident where I needed it.
But, I have, fortunately or unfortunately, have witnessed three events wherein people died for the lack of attention to safety on the water. Two were catastrophic because the people wore no life jackets. In one event, we were able to pluck a 3-year-old from the water because she was wearing a life jacket. But, the Father drowned. He could not swim and wore no life jacket. Thank God, he had at least given thought for his daughter.
Right in the center of our Home Page is a small insert that seems to become more obscured as we add 'fishing stuff' to the site.
There are 4 great 'truths' of fishing:
- Catching fish is easy; finding them is the hard part
- Dry lures catch darn few fish
- The harder you fish, it seems the 'luckier' you get
Momma always said to 'be safe'
Maybe Momma did get something across to us after all.
Maybe we should remember to always remind others, because Momma always said ---.
