Fishin' Tipster takes a look at
THE 'HawgSnatcher'
Well, by golly, I think we have found a 'gadget' that does exactly what it says it is designed to do and WILL do!! In a World of advertising claims that always tout "Mine is bigger and better and faster than yours!", it is refreshing to find an advertisement that is really truthful.
When HawgSnatcher's Jeff Wickizer first contacted me about their new offering, I will admit I was immediately skeptical. I think I have gotten that way from seeing and testing to many talking/flashing/good-tasting lures, magic 'call them into the boat' scents, and junky fishing accessories. But, I told Jeff that I was willing to takes a look if he cared to provide a sample of the product.
I looked over Jeff's website at www.hawgsnatcher.com and got a good idea of what we were going to be looking at and what we should expect. This graphic pretty well explains it:
I am not going to bore you with a bunch of 'we tested this' and 'we did that'. Suffice to say that we gave the HawgSnatcher device a good going over and a solid field test (the Stick Marsh bass can be really helpful with that).
Here are our findings:
- The HawgSnatcher is a great idea and does just exactly what it says it will do. I always slide the long handle of my trigger-grip casting rod under my forearm when I need leverage on a fish. Now, the HawgSnatcher provides that leverage for landing fish, as well as constantly supporting the arm, wrist and hand during the casting and retrieving phases. This is very beneficial, especially if you 'palm' your baitcasting reel. It really reduces the arm fatigue caused from long hours of fishing.
- Another thing we found is that, because you are always in position to set the hook, you can do so immediately. No time lost while repositioning the rod for leverage.
- The device is designed and built well. The material is a plastic, but it is neither hard nor brittle. It appears to have enough natural elasticity to survive in the fishing wars. We dropped it, slammed it down on the concrete driveway, let the car door shut on it, and even played 'fetch' with the dog using the HawgSnatcher device. It hardly got a mark on it.
Finally, my wife and best fishing partner, Dot, was the first to give the HawgSnatcher its Stick Marsh field test. Now, she won't give it back. From the picture you can probably see why (note the HawgSnatcher on her rod).
If you had heard the drag screaming, you'd know that she needed all the leverage she could come up with to handle that old sow bass!! Landing this 10 lb. 10 oz. giant was a result of being able to control her in an area of grass and stumps in the south end of the Farm 13/Stick Marsh impoundment. There is no doubt the HawgSnatcher was a big help. I have seen small fish pull her rod tip over and into the water. But, that forearm leverage point allowed Dot to keep the rod tip high, put pressure on the fish and stay in control.
In conclusion, the Old Fishin' Tipster (Weekend Semi-Pro and National Backlash Pickin' Champion) recommends the HawgSnatcher for anyone who uses long-handled baitcasting rigs and especially if they 'palm' the reel. It works and it is 'good stuff'.
