Fishin' Tipster Takes A Look

Wrangler 'Hero' Outdoor Gear Clothing

If you have ever paid $40.00 for a Columbia, Bimini Bay or Penn fishing shirt or pair of pants/shorts with zip-off legs, you know that is an expensive way to stay cool and comfortable in the summer out-of-doors. Occasionally, we find even MORE expensive brands of this style clothing, such as TarponWear and Cabela's popular GuideWear. We spend a lot of time on the water here in Florida and one thing we really prize is a good brand of tough, cool clothing.

While wandering through a local Wal-Mart SuperCenter recently, we happened to notice the lack of the usual T-shirts hanging in the sporting goods department. Instead, there were real shirts with buttons and real pants with belt loops. Upon a closer inspection, we found these to be the Wrangler Company's new line called 'Wrangler Hero', in a style called 'Outdoor Gear'. (Note: while the 'Hero' line is listed, we did not find these 'Outdoor Gear' items to be on the Wrangler web site; possibly, they will be up as you read this.)

Wrangler has long been known as the maker of authentic western jeans. While trailing the Levis brand jeans in overall popularity, the Wrangler western jeans appear to capture the true 'cowboy' audience.

And, we think their 'Hero' line of 'Outdoor Gear' clothing is going to capture fishermen and others similarly engaged in outdoor pursuits in summer weather. It is great quality, has a 1-year warranty on everything, and costs 30-50% less than comparable products. Plus, the ventilation cape on the shirt is the best I have used.

We bought two shirts and one pair of pants/shorts with the zip-off legs. Having numerous other brands approximating the same garments, we compared them all and here is what we found.
  • The Wrangler Hero Outdoor Gear short-sleeve shirt is 100% nylon and has an excellent cape ventilation system in the back. Unlike some nylon materials, this one is cool and wicks moisture extremely well. It has an exceptionally long tail, so that it stays in well. The pockets are large bellows-types, with Velcro fasteners. It is the most comfortable shirt we own. 'Wash and Wear' qualities are excellent, with very little wrinkling. In fact, it is nice-looking enough for everyday wear. The short sleeved shirt is sized large, so always buy one size smaller than you normally wear.
  • The Wrangler Hero Outdoor Wear long sleeve shirt is 100% cotton and is meant for cooler mornings and days, or just good sun protection. The sleeves roll up neatly and are secured with the normal Swiss Tab system. The cotton fabric compares well to the short sleeve version, except that it wrinkles a bit more. It is sized properly, so buy the size you normally wear.

  • The Wrangler Hero Outdoor Wear pants/shorts, with zip-off legs, really impressed us. They are 70% cotton and 30% nylon, which means they are comfortable and dry quickly, while also being a tougher fabric blend (for sitting and sliding on). The leg zippers are positioned perfectly for easy removal and re-attachment. Plus, they good sturdy zippers; not flimsy junk. The pockets are ventilated. The front slash pockets are deep and roomy, and the lower cargo pockets have Velcro closures. There are two back pockets, which are small and have no flaps or Velcro (use them only for handkerchiefs). The pants/shorts have an excellent fit and have loops for a belt. The pants/shorts we obtained were sized a bit small, and they were somewhat tight in the crotch and seat. We suggest you try them on first, or buy one size larger than you normally wear.

You owe it to yourself to look these items of outdoor clothing over. We guarantee you will be impressed, and we never steer you wrong!!
