ANOTHER SKEETER RESTORATION
ANOTHER (AND EVEN BETTER) SKEETER RESTORATION!!
Bill Richey, one of our web site regulars, queried us about 6 months ago regarding an old Skeeter he had come across. His 'find' was even older than the '60 model we restored.
Bill's has a Fiberglas bottom (hull) section and a wooden top section. It is a little hard to tell what the wood is, but it appears to be plywood.
Bill has done a remarkable job of restoring the old rig, which appears to be a late '40 model. It looks around 12-feet long and has all the original characteristics of the original Skeeter 'bayou boats'.
One thing to particularly note is the original type of stick steering. In this case, there is no enclosed cable system as all the present day systems use. Instead, the steering position hardware has a large wheel-type assembly that is turned by moving the steering stick. This wheel, which is basically just a large pulley, drives a small cable that is looped around it and moved the motor side to side. I had never seen one of these systems until I got Bill's photos.
Bill indicated to me that he might be in the market to sell the restored boat, if there was interest. He can be contacted at email address wrichey@gt.rr.com.
